Suzanne Vega has announced plans to release her first album in over 10 years, and has shared a new track, 'Speakers Corner'. You can find out all details below.

Vega confirmed this news regarding her album via a post shared on social media. The album, titled 'Flying With Angels', is to arrive on May 2, and is available to pre order.

“Flying With Angels is my first studio album of new songs in eleven years,” Vega wrote on Instagram. “Each song on the album takes place in an atmosphere of struggle. Struggle to survive, to speak, to dominate, to win, to escape, to help someone else, or just live".

'The shutting down of the Speaker's Corner'

The accompanying single, 'Speakers Corner', is a song which explores how it is easier to speak your mind on issues through social media today, and where privileges can also be misused.

On this track, Vega said, “That’s something you don’t want in democracy: the shutting down of the Speakers’ Corner where people get a say. This is a moment in time when people are saying a lot, but sometimes they’re not making sense or not telling the truth. People should be accountable for what they say. They can’t just lie. One would think that that would be self-evident".

Along with the album, Suzanne Vega also announced her UK tour dates, where she will head over to Liverpool, Bristol, Cambridge, Stoke, as well as London's Royal Albert Hall. She will be supported by guest Katherine Priddy.

Tickets go on sale this Friday (March 7) at 10am. Find out more information on this here.

'Speaker's Corner' is not the first time that Suzanne Vega has used her music to raise awareness on issues. Her 1987 single, Luka, raised awareness on abuse and domestic violence.

The singer had spoken in previous interviews about this topic, having revealed that she suffered such abuse at the hands of her stepfather, Ed Vega.

"Every time I sing 'Luka' [a song about domestic abuse], I think to myself there is always someone in the audience who needs to hear the song, or who has never heard it before. I never begrudge playing it, I always play it with my whole heart, and it's still meaningful to me", Vega said in 2020.
