Tánaiste Leo Varadkar has said that existing Covid-19 restrictions should be given “a chance to work.”

He said: “I think the situation is very alarming."

“It’s not possible to rule out additional restrictions but I do think at this point in time give the restrictions in place a bit of time to work."

“It is very much down to how we as individuals and as a society embrace the rules and restrictions and the best thing we can do is stay at home if at all possible."

“I think the public would understand that the vaccine does change the picture we’ve an opportunity now to suppress the virus and get numbers down really low and use that time to vaccinate those who are most at risk and then assess the situation at that point.”

Almost 5,000 new cases and a further seven deaths were reported yesterday.
