The Searchers have confirmed that they will bring the curtain down on almost 70 years of touring when they perform at Glastonbury this Summer.

The band who were originally formed by Mike Pender and John McNally in 1957, are known as the "longest running in pop history". Over the last seven decades, The Searchers have sold over 50 million records.

They have had as many as three UK number ones, including their own take on The Drifters' hit Sweet For My Sweet. Other hits include Sugar and Spice, Don't Throw Your Love Away, and Needles And Pins.

"incredible"

Speaking about this final show, John McNally said: "A Glastonbury debut at 83, can anyone top that? I don't think life gets any better, does it?".

"There will be a few nerves, but in a good way, and we'll be nicely warmed up from our shows in June. We can't wait to see our fans again for this incredible final farewell".

Bassist and singer, Frank Allen, who joined The Searchers in 1964, also commented: "I have played shows across the world with The Searchers for over 60 years; Glastonbury has always been an ambition that has eluded us - until now".

"The Searchers are finally performing at the greatest music festival of them all", he added. "What a way to round off a tour and a career. I can't wait to get up on stage and give our fans one final blast".

The Searchers confirmed that their Final Farewell show will see them make their debut at the Glastonbury stage on 27 June, which they said would be their "last ever show". This will be the last stop as part of this tour, which kicks off on June 14.

Glastonbury will also see legendary singer Neil Young perform on stage, despite originally dropping out of the event due to the BBC's involvement in the show. More on this from Nova here.
