Thin Lizzy are to release a new stripped-down album called, Acoustic Sessions in the new year.

Acoustic Sessions will include archival contributions from late Thin Lizzy singer Phil Lynott and former Brian Downey, and will be released on 24 January next year.

The album will feature reimagined songs from co-founder Eric Bell, who has added acoustic guitar to the songs.

These songs had previously featured on the 50th anniversary super-deluxe editions of Thin Lizzy’s 1971 self titled debut album, as well as Shades of a Blue Orphanage (1972), and Vagabounds of the Western World (1973).

Acoustic Sessions will also include a bonus song called ‘Slow Blues GM’ in tribute to former bandmember Gary Moore, who died of a heart attack in 2011 aged 58.

Bell On Using A Different Approach

In an official statement, Eric Bell revealed that he used an approach which was quite similar to how Thin Lizzy officially approached the production of their tracks.

“I remember recording ‘Eire’ from our debut album Thin Lizzy in 1971. I wrote the main guitar part first on acoustic and then we built it up from there. I played the 12-string acoustic throughout the track and introduced the electric on top”, Bell said.

He added: “This was useful in the studio in Belfast recently where we recorded fresh guitar parts to allow us to create new Thin Lizzy acoustic versions of some of our favorite songs. By recreating those original acoustic parts and adding the vocals which Philip laid down on the day and those original drum parts which Brian came up with in the original recording sessions”.

Producer Richard Whittaker also provided the album’s basic tracks for Acoustic Sessions, once the Thin Lizzy remixes were completed.

“After sifting through all the Decca recordings, I presented a list of ideas. However, in most cases, additional development and material was required. So the guys at the label approached Eric, who was happy to get involved with the project and between us, I think we’ve made something really quite unique and special”, he said.
