The upcoming Bob Dylan biopic ‘A Complete Unknown’ has finally revealed its release date for this upcoming Christmas.
The new film is directed by academy-award-winning director James Mangold and will star Timothée Chalamet as the the iconic musician.
In an announcement made to X, Searchlight Pictures revealed that the film will see its worldwide release in the US on December 25th, Christmas day. The biopic will land in UK and Irish cinemas a few weeks later on January 17th.
The release date announcement follows the first trailer for “A Complete Unknown” dropping earlier this July. It features Chalamet singing the now 83-year-old’s famous folk tune “A Hard Rains a Gonna Fall”.
“I needed to step it up,”
Mangold announced earlier this year that the ‘Dune’ star would be singing all of Dylan’s music in the film.
Chalamet told GQ that he used his’ Dune: Part Two’ co-star Austin Butler’s “entire Elvis team” to help transform himself for the part. “I just saw the way [Butler] committed to it all, and realised I needed to step it up,”
The film follows the 19-year-old US-born star as he rises to fame, amidst the backdrop of rumbustious 1960’s America.
The synopsis reads: “New York, early 1960s. Against the backdrop of a vibrant music scene and tumultuous cultural upheaval, an enigmatic 19-year-old from Minnesota arrives in the West Village with his guitar and revolutionary talent, destined to change the course of American music. As he forms his most intimate relationships during his rise to fame, he grows restless with the folk movement and, refusing to be defined, makes a controversial choice that culturally reverberates worldwide.”
The film was adapted by Mangold and Jay Cocks from the 2015 book ‘Dylan Goes Electric’ by Elijah Wald.
“I’ve spent several, wonderfully charming, days in his company,”
The ‘Knockin’ On Heavens Door’ singer, now aged 83, was not involved in the filming but did meet with Mangold and give notes on the script.
“I’ve spent several, wonderfully charming, days in his company, just one-on-one, talking to him,” Mangold told Variety. “I have a script that’s personally annotated by him and treasured by me.”
Chalamet isn’t the only A-lister seen on the cast as he is also joined by the likes of Edward Norton as Pete Seeger, Elle Fanning as Sylvie Russo, Monica Barbaro as Joan Baez, Boyd Holbrook as Johnny Cash, Dan Fogler as Albert Grossman and Scoot McNairy as Woody Guthrie.
