The Taoiseach has met US President, Donald Trump at the White House. The President told Micheal Martin that he "Doesn't want to hurt Ireland but he (The Taoiseach) knows and understands we want fairness."
President Trump referring to the impending trade tariff war with the European Union.
"We have tremendous business relationships with Ireland, and that will only get stronger." President Trump said.
Trump criticised Ireland's favourable tax rates, saying that they have attracted U.S. pharmaceutical companies overseas, leading to a significant trade imbalance. Trump remarked, "They've taken our pharma away from us, I'm not angry at you, the Irish people are smart"
The discussion took in some international issues, notably the ongoing conflicts in Gaza and Ukraine. Before the meeting, the Taoiseach called for increased aid to Gaza and advocated for a ceasefire and the release of remaining hostages.
Trade relations were also a focal point, especially in light of recent U.S. tariffs on steel and aluminium imports, which have elicited global reactions. While Ireland has not been directly targeted by these tariffs, the Taoiseach highlighted potential implications for Ireland's economy, especially with an impending tariff war with the EU.
