The site of the former mother and baby home in Tuam, Co Galway, is now to be fully excavated and forensically examined.
The government reached the decision that a full excavation was the best progression at its cabinet meeting earlier this morning.
A forensic examination will intend to identify the remains of all children that are buried at the site.
