Just a third of Dubliners feel safe in the city centre at night, according to a survey about the capital’s night-time economy.
This figure is down from the 35% who said they felt safe in a survey in December last year.
Dubliners see safety as a top priority, with 63% of respondents ranking “better safety at night” as one of their key priorities for improving the night-time experience.
Another critical issue saw 55% of respondents citing improved night-time transport as a top priority.
As cost of living issues remain, 50% of respondents cited the expense of going out as a significant barrier to enjoying the city at night.
Ray O’Donoghue, Dublin’s Night-Time Economy Advisor, shared the survey findings saying they had “already reflected” in the Night-Time Economy Strategy from Dublin City Council.
“Results from the latest and invaluable Your Dublin, Your Voice survey reveal what really matters to Dubliners after dark – with safety, transport, and low-cost cultural activities topping the list of priorities for an improved night-time experience”.
“This progress is being driven by the Night-Time Economy Advisor, with incredible support from stakeholders and partners shaping the future of Dublin’s evenings and nights.”
Survey results showed strong public support for initiatives such as Nocturnal Beats, Culture Night, a comedy culture and Welfare Areas which were piloted over Christmas.
28% of respondents indicated they would like to see more free or low-cost cultural activities at night.
The survey also revealed that a significant number of Dubliners are unsatisfied with the city’s current night-time offering. Only 7% rated Dublin’s nightlife better than cities they have visited abroad
