In tribute to Shane MacGowan, students from a school in Tyrone delivered a cover of 'Fairytale Of New York'.

The cover which was delivered by the pupils of Holy Trinity College in Cookstown, has become a major internet sensation.

Having released it on the same day as the Pogues singer's funeral last Friday (8 December), the video has already gained a quarter of a million views at the time of writing.

The funeral saw MacGowan get a beautiful send off at Nenagh, co Tipperary, following a procession which began in Dublin that morning.

This service also saw Nick Cave and Imelda May deliver moving covers of classic Pogues tracks. See more here.

That very same day saw the pupils of Holy Trinity College perform their cover of festive Pogues hit 'Fairytale Of New York', which has gone down a treat online.

“We have ‘Feel Good Friday’, a music session where pupils and staff get together to showcase and record music and song", teacher Geard McStocker said.

Mr McStocker continued, “Year 14 music student Patrick Bell, under the guidance of his teachers, decided to record a few songs on the ‘GarageBand’ app".

“They’d planned to release these over the Christmas holidays. However, considering the recent passing of Shane MacGowan, they thought it was fitting to hasten the release of Fairytale Of New York".

The teacher also joked that this also led to a frantic search to find Christmas jumpers for the students for this special performance.

"There was a bit of a rush to find Christmas jumpers for pupils to wear in the video", he explained.

Last week, The Darkness invited their fans at their show in Dublin to a sing-along of 'Fairytale Of New York', in tribute to Shane MacGowan. See here.
