Verona Murphy has been elected as Ceann Comhairle of the 34th Dáil.

The independent TD from Wexford is the first woman to hold the office in the history of the state.

She was elected on the third count, beating competition from Sinn Féin's Aengus O'Snodaigh and Fianna Fáil TDs Sean O'Fearghail and John McGuinness.

Earlier, before the vote, Ms Murphy told her Dáil colleagues:

“If you choose to elect me as the first female Ceann Comhairle in the state, it will signify a very diverse, inclusive and forward looking 34th Dail

If elected I will execute the office of Ceann Comhairle of Dáil Eireann without fear or favour.”

The first meeting of the 34th Dáil got underway this morning, with the names of all 174 TDs read into the record by Dáil clerk Peter Finnegan.

Taoiseach Simon Harris tendered his resignation to President Michael D Higgins earlier today.

However, he will stay in the role until the Dáil votes for a new Taoiseach.

Mr Harris is due to attend a European Council meeting in Brussels tonight.

Over 60 of the newly-elected TDs have today taken their seats in the Dáil Chamber for their first time.

While there are now 44 women TDs in Dáil Eireann, making up a quarter of the chamber - an increase of 2 per cent compared to the last Dáil.
