You Can "Forget About Takeaway Pints" But No Ban

Taoiseach Micheál Martin has told the public to "forget about takeaway pints" and that the sale of alcohol for the streets is “very irresponsible”.

His announcement came yesterday as the Government introduced new level 5 restrictions to help curb the spread of Covid-19.

Martin said: "First of all, forget about takeaway pints, takeaway alcohol."

"No publicans should be selling takeaway pints"

"This is a very serious situation we are in, it leads to congregation, it leads to gathering of people that can spread the disease, the virus and that's a very clear message from me and government in relation to that."

"If you have 200 people on the street, or 150 or so, that can spread the virus. That's the message."

Yesterday The Licensed Vintners Association took to Twitter, tweeting: "We agree with the Taoiseach, in the current circumstances no pub should be selling takeaway pints for consumption on the streets."
